The capstone, and most critical, project of the PhD program is the doctoral dissertation. The series of courses within the department dealing with professional development concludes with the dissertation prospectus seminar, which students take in the sixth semester, if they have passed their examinations. The dissertation prospectus seminar provides a shared structure for the process of identifying viable Brown University Ph.D. program in Philosophy is designed to provide strong support for students’ research. In the first year, students focus exclusively on course work. Teaching responsibilities begin in the second year, continue through the fourth year, and return in the sixth year. After devoting two years to coursework, students begin their research in the third year by conducting literature reviews under the A thesis must also be presented to and approved by at least two faculty members (the thesis director and a second reader). Of these, the thesis director will normally be drawn from the Institute faculty. Former requirements for Ph.D. in Old World Archaeology and Art.
